Write Away.

Write Now?

In baseball there is a saying- “swing away” This is for the batter to have the all clear from the coach to swing at whatever comes their way. I apply this concept to writing.

You might be thinking, what in the world are you talking about, Tyaan? BUT hear me out…

Ignore your fear

I used to be terrified of writing. I’d write something but never share it because it wasn’t “good enough”. But that isn’t true for anyone or anything. How many times have you ever done something perfect on the first try? I know I sure haven’t, so why on earth did I have this unrealistic expectation for myself?

It doesn't have to be perfect

Slowly but surely, my viewpoint changed. I read a book called “Scrappy Rough Draft”. And it gave me the confidence to write and share my work. It taught me that every good book I’ve ever read started out as a first draft and got better from there.

That's Rough

The first thing the book tells you is that your first draft will be crap, and that’s okay. It then gives you tools on how to write your first draft.

Writing a good book starts with a draft and ends with multiple revisions. You can’t write a great book on the first try.

Write away, write now.

I tend to be what’s known in the author world as a discovery writer. I don’t know where the story is going to go until I sit down and write it.

A rough explanation is I throw it all at the wall and see what sticks. Writing away works for me because it allows me to follow my process and I learn so much about the story.

Your first draft is going to be rough. But that’s part of the process.

If you’re interested in becoming a writer, simply write away and see what happens. You might complete a first draft. Or if you’re not wanting to become a writer, find something that brings you happiness and swing away at that.

My next post will be about my writing process. Follow along for that bit!
